Ethnomusicology is an academic field of musicology and ethnology.  It encompasses various approaches to the study of music.   The ways of the study are examination and academic documentary, writing down pieces of music, idealistic, Yeprem Savayan - Komitas. National Gallery of Armenia.stylistic and compositional analysis of  the music and lyrics, definition of  the level of tuning  of musical systems and national instruments. The main problems of ethnomusicology are to find out national musical compositions of different historical periods, to clarify the national-stylistic features of music, its role in the history, in modern and everyday life of spiritual culture of the nation, to reveal the interaction between national music and composed music, the musical relations of different nations. Pieces of national music have been recorded and studied from ancient times. Ethnomusicology, as an independent academic branch was formed in the second half of XIX century.  The founder of Armenian ethnomusicology is Komitas.  Musical art of Armenian nation always caught the attention of  chroniclers, poets and esthetes. Various lyrics of national songs were recorded,  studied and used in spiritual music in Middle Ages.  National dances, instruments are depicted in Armenian miniatures. N. Tigranyan, K. Kara-Murza, M. Yekmalyan, Komitas, S. Melikyan, as well as Russian musicians I. Dobrovolskim M. A. Balakirev, M. P. Musorgski, M. M. Ippolitov-Ivanov and others recorded Armenian national songs.
