Henri Verneuil (Ashot Malakyan) (15.10.1920, Rodosto-11.1.2002, Paris) French-Armenian film director, writer. Member of Academy of Fine Arts (2000). He began to live inFrance from 1930. He studied at the lycée in Aix-en-Provence, later he worked as a journalist. Series of articles on Armenian Genocide by Henri Verneuil were published in French press. From 1948 he began to work in film industry.  European film actor Fernandel  appeared in his short films. His “Village Feud” (“La Table-aux-Crevés”, 1951) made him one"Mayrig" (1991) of the best film directors in France. Later, he directed more than 50 movies with the participation of Jean Gabin, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Omar Sharif, Claudia Cardinale and others. Among his best films are “Forbidden Fruit” ("Le Fruit défendu", 1952), “Maxim” (1956), “I as in Icarus” (“I comme Icare”, 1978), “Mayrig” (1991, Cesar award in 1996). Henri Verneuil was the author of  autobiographical novel “Mayrig”. In 1980 he visited Armenia. Henri Verneuil won French Legion of Honor in 1995.
