Makhokhyan Vardan (31.5.1869, Trabzon-11.2.1937, Nice (France)) Armenian marine artist. In 1894 he graduated from Berlin Academy of Fine Arts, after which he improved his professional skills in the studio of Aivazovsky (1894).

Vardan Makhokhyan painted landscapes and seascapes (“The Monastery in Trabzon”, “Storm in Sevastopol”, “Wrath of the Sea at Twilight”, “Shores of Bretagne”, “A Wave”, “Shores of Denmark”, “Russian Steppes”, etc). These paintings are distinguished with soft colour combinations, and deep sense of reality and materiality. In his landscapes Vardan Makhokhyan depicted the tragic events of the history of the Armenian people. After Ivan (Hovhannes) Aivazovsky Makhokhyan is the most eminent marine artist in the Armenian new fine art. He had personal exhibitions in Cairo (1902, 1904), Alexandrapol (1904), Munich, Düsseldorf, Berlin (1907), London (1914), Nice (1918, 1932, 1936), Marseille (1923), Paris (1925). Makhokhyan’s paintings are exhibited in the National Gallery of Armenia, Pontifical Residence Museum of St. Echmiadzin, Museum of Fine Arts of Nice, as well as in the M. K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum, in the museum of Mechitarist Congregation (Venice) and in private collections. In 1925 Makhokhyan was awarded National Order of the Legion of Honour.
